This baby boy had Transposition of Great Arteries (D-TGA) and he underwent Arterial Switch Operation (ASO) at the age of 10 days. The right coronary artery and the left coronary artery are translocated from the old pulmonary artery to the neoAorta after transecting then switching the Aorta and the Pulmonary Artery. The patient is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Japanese hospital, Cairo University Hospital ,receiving intensive care until the heart stabilizes.
Dr. Yasser Menaissy, Professor of Cardiothoracic surgery, who lead the team of surgeons, emphasized that this operation is one of the most challenging pediatric cardiac surgeries, requiring a highly experienced medical team. The team successfully completed the procedure, utilizing advanced surgical techniques that included disconnecting and reconnecting the aorta and the pulmonary artery in a criss cross manner.
Special medication is used to strengthen the heart. The patient is showing signs of recovery. Dr. Zeinab Salah, Head of the Cardiothoracic ICU, stated that the medical team immediately started treatment upon the child’s arrival. Tests were conducted, and the neonate was placed in a special incubator for several days before being transferred for further medical interventions.
The patient was prepared for surgery, which is considered one of the most complex cardiac procedures for neonates. He stayed in the ICU for 12 days first on a ventilator, then he was extubated and resumed normal feeding.
The surgery’s success highlights the importance of early surgical intervention for congenital heart defects, especially considering the unique challenges that can arise from premature development. This operation was the first of its kind, made possible by the dedication of the surgical team and advancements in medical technology.
